Job Description:
The Guidance Counsellor plays a key role in supporting Secondary 3 to 5 students as they explore their academic goals, post-secondary options, and future pathways. The counsellor guides students and families through course selection, graduation requirements, CEGEP and post-secondary planning, applications, and important timelines.
As part of the Student Services team, the Guidance Counsellor also provides social-emotional support to students navigating the personal and developmental challenges of adolescence and works collaboratively with teachers, parents, administrators, the Academic Resource team, and outside professionals when appropriate.
Principal responsibilities
- Guide students in exploring post-secondary options, including CEGEP, university, vocational and alternative pathways
- Support students with course selection, graduation requirements, academic planning, applications, prerequisites and important timelines
- Meet individually with students and families to support informed academic and post-secondary decision-making
- Stay current with post-secondary institutions, programs, admission requirements and application processes
- Provide individual short-term counselling and guidance for social, emotional and personal concerns
- Support students with stress management, motivation, self-advocacy and decision-making
- Collaborate closely with the Academic Resource and Student Services teams
- Participate in student case discussions and contribute to support plans when appropriate
- Consult and communicate with teachers, parents and administration as needed
- Refer students to outside professionals when appropriate and coordinate follow-up
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records and documentation
- Contribute to workshops, information sessions and school initiatives related to student well-being and post-secondary planning
Required job skills and qualifications:
- University degree in Counselling Psychology, Education, or a related field
- Certification or eligibility to work as a Guidance Counsellor in Quebec
- Experience working with adolescents; secondary school experience is strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of the Quebec CEGEP system and post-secondary pathways and admission processes
- Ability to provide both academic guidance and social-emotional support
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
- Sound judgment, discretion and understanding of the ethical and legal considerations involved in working with adolescents
